Winston Surfshirt Headlines the Festival After Party
Live music and rocking après down in the Village are as synonymous with Thredbo in September as the huge jump built up the top of the mountain. The 2017 One Hit Wonder Mountain Festival is bringing together all the elements for an incredible alpine experience. Although the current forecast may delay the World Tour Big Air event until later in the week, the next few days promises a rare (but epic) Spring blizzard, so don't consign your powder skis and boards to the cupboard under the stairs just yet. And we all know there is no point to a powder day if there is no where to brag about it afterwards... Cue the music.
By Wednesday everyone at the Keller is sure to want to hear about your sweet face-shots from Thredbo's bluffs. Unfortunately the Keller's Full Moon parties have become famous for being one loudest nights of the week with free entry, free glow face painting, and some of the hottest DJs in Australia drowning out your howling.
Ok well what about Thursday you ask? Decent gusts on the radar means wind-blown stashes will be all-time on the mountain. You'll be like "I was chest deep bro!" or even "it was double over-head in Michael's!" Head back to the Keller from 6pm til late (all ages event until 9pm) for the Skate Night Closing Party for an unmissable evening of skate and punk. Live bands (as opposed to dead ones) Whispering Jackie and Macondo Blowout will provide the soundtrack to jam sessions and mini competitions with loads of prizes for skaters and spectators.
Hopefully by Saturday the blizzard will have given way to sunny skis under which to witness what we came here for - The Toyota One Hit Wonder Big Air. But whether it's a day of park or powder, tales of big airs or big slashes will fuel the afternoon buzz around the hotel poolside fire pits. Head straight from the slopes to First Base: A Vintage Après Soirèe, where the likes of Luke Million, Hugo Gruzman & Tom Tilley will inducing early 80's nostalgia with fluorescent one pieces and a quiver of throwback DJ tunes. The party will be happening from 3pm til 7pm and will set the vibe for the main event over in the Village Square.
The crescendo of the week-long festivities is headlined by six-piece band Winston Surfshirt live on an outdoor stage in the heart of the village. From Sydney’s northern beaches, carving their way into the Australian music scene, Winston Surfshirt are One of country’s most interesting bands. Their unique blend of soul and hip-hop is the auditory equivalent of A Tribe Called Quest splitting spliffs with your parent’s favourite band. The Village Square after party kicks off at 6pm with Strange Associates followed by Panama and is free for all ages before it wraps up the 2017 Winter season at 9:30pm. If you did it right and started the end of your day at 3pm poolside, that equals a solid 7 odd hours of partying to cap off one of the biggest weeks of skiing, boarding and world class athletes in the Australian Alps.
A perfect blizzard of powder and parties with a side of the biggest jump on the world tour is brewing.
